20% Off | Smiling Planet | Darling Clementine {horray}

I have the pleasure of not only working with Lindsay from Darling Clementine again this week but Olivia Haviland too this time. Olivia is the owner of Smiling Planet. If you aren't familiar with her company, you really should be.

You see, I was going to end this week with a long-winded post about plastic. Reminding everybody that chemicals are poison and plastic being one of the worst. I believe, as many others do as well, that most ailments, disease and health problems often go hand-in-hand with chemical and pesticide exposure. It's all around us. In everything we do, buy, clean, touch, and sadly...eat.

At home my kids have plastic toys and other plastic stuff. As mindful as we are, it's just so hard to stick to WOOD ONLY toys and glass bowls for meals. GLASS? Really? That wouldn't last long. We'd be buying new bowls every day.

So, you could imagine my excitment when I came across these cool bowls and plates. Not only are they made from the hightest quality, non-toxic, medical grade plastic, they are ADORABLE!!!!!!!!!!

OH and not only did I find out that Olivia's family LOVES kookie karma {her words, no joke}, she told me that her kids favorite health snack is an apple!

AND...of all her products her favorites are:

2) which of your products is your favorite?

"our circle of life plate, both boys and girls love it, i love the peaceful and whimsical quality of the drawings.

our wrap me not gift set which encourages parents to give the present as is. I really like the wrap me not manifesto on the side and the one can write the To:  and From: directly on the box."

She also reaffirms to me that

"the plastic (number #5) that we use is medical grade, so i know that it does not leach any harmfull chemicals. number #5 is regarded as a safe plastic by such leading authorities as healthy child healthy world, and the plastic we use is medical grade which adheres to higher standards than food grade. The decorations are printed sub-surface and not printed on top like most children's dinnerware. My daughters use them every day."

AND BEST OF ALL, LUCKY US...in honor of this fun post today, Lindsay from Darling Clementine is offering 20% off all Smiling Planet products for PUREmamas readers! WOOOOHOOOOOOOOO. I'm not kidding this the best news ever. So hurry up and enter PUREMAMAS at checkout and receive 20% off ... deal only lasts 2 weeks.

THANK YOU LINDSAY! And thanks Olivia! We are SO excited.

Hydrate From The Outside :: Meredith Shows Us How

For those that know me well- you know that I am obsessed with hydration. Staying hydrated is one of the most important aspects of "getting the glow". If you are not well hydrated your body doesn't have enough water to function properly. We loose water all the time through sweating, going to the bathroom, breathing etc. Staying hydrated helps control your appetite, energy levels, and increases immunity. So... I try to remedy by that drinking a large glass of lemon water in the morning, plenty of water throughout the day, and eating a diet full of water rich fruits, vegetables and juices. I could go on about the inside stuff, but Juli and Christine covered it.

I would be lying if I didn't admit that external hydration wasn't what really turns me on. It is. I fear the dry patch and the wrinkle and am on a lifelong mission to fight it!

My skin is naturally on the dryer side, and I live in a cold climate so for me moisturizing goes beyond slapping some lotion on when I get out of the shower. It is a ritual. I moisturize first thing in the morning, and last thing at night, every single day- in addition to my out of shower moisturizing application. Crazy? Not really. For me it is therapeutic. I use the 5 minutes to relax and focus on the day ahead, or chill out before I go to sleep. The full body self message is an ancient technique for maintaining wellness. I completely subscribe.

I try to make 90% of my products as natural as possible. Fortunately the natural brands are starting to get on the science bandwagon and creating things that really work.

What are the products that make this happen? And what is the schedule?

Coconut Oil or Sesame Oil (if I am working out or going to the gym)
ShiKai Borage Oil Lotion (If I have to get dressed in real clothes) - I LOVE this product. It absorbs well and has little to no scent.
Aesop Rejuvenate Aromatique Body Balm Tube (If I am feeling like spoiling myself)

3 Step After Shower

1- Coconut Oil
2- Environ Derma- Lac Lotion - (This isn't the most natural product, but it is completely AMAZING) It exfoliates, and hydrates like no other.
3- Shikai-Borage Oil- You have to follow the derma-lac with a lotion or oil for it to really work.

Note *Always put the coconut oil on before your skin is completely dry. This helps lock in the moisture. If you have extremely dry skin-  taking long hot showers sucks the life out! I know it sucks not to take LONG, HOT showers, but it really doesn't do you any good!

Coconut Oil or Sesame Oil (This application is really just for fun) + Lavender Essential Oil

My face products always fluctuate. The one face "tool" that I can't live without is the Clairsonic Mia. It exfoliates, cleanses and tones your skin allowing all the product to get in. It is an amazing investment.

Exfoliation + Moisturizer = HYDRATION (You really can't do one without the other!)

Some of my face moisturizers on rotation are (love them ALL) :

Tata Harper Rebuilding Moisturizer
Mario Badescu AHA and Ceramide Moisturizer
Ren Ultra Moisturizing Day Cream
Aubrey Organics Sea Buckthorn and Cucumber
Face Mist

On hand ALWAYS. I can not travel, live or breath without face mist! I love Aubrey Organics Sparkling Mineral Water Herbal Complexion Mist. It works wonders!

Ok. Ok. Ok. I can't stop yet. When hydration and detoxification is REALLY necessary is after travel. After a red eye flight a few days ago, and social obligations that didn't give me any jet lag time, I came up with my own version of the overall castor oil body pack. I am now completely obsessed!

After Travel Hydrating Detox Mask

As a life long health food store "goer" and obvious skin hydration product hoard, the fact that I seemed to miss the boat on the powers of Castor Oil came as a shock to me. It wasn't until I started writing my book last year that I became enlightened. Castor Oil is pretty much the miracle moisturizer. It is a little too thick and greasy to use socially, so I use it as an all over body hydration mask.

Castor oil is a super high density vegetable oil with a very mild odor and color. Because of its molecular density castor oil absorbs very well into the skin, making it an extremely effective moisturizer. It is a powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal so it is beneficial for various ailments, including ab cramps, headaches, muscle pains, inflammatory conditions, skin eruptions, lesions, and skin irritations. A castor oil pack is made by soaking a piece of flannel in castor oil, then putting it on the area of complaint and placing a heat source, such as a hot water bottle, on top of the area. The powers of castor oil work from the outside in! It can even induce LABOR.

- Get the bathroom steamy hot with a little shower steam and a space heater. (not super green, but I don't have a sauna)

- Set up a little palate in your bathroom and bring some magazines.

- Massage your whole body in castor oil (head included) *A little goes a long way

- Hang out naked for at least 30 minutes (or meditate).

- Follow with a warm shower or Epsom salt bath.

- Moisturize like normal

With no food, sleep, or down time- I literally felt like a new person after this. I can't wait to do it again!

Last note... taking care of yourself is the point of ALL of this- whatever that means for you. I am a firm believer that skincare is a HEALTHY obsession!! So... ENJOY-  LOVE yourself and your BODY.

Busy Weeks & Happy Notes!

I'm not sure if I have told everybody yet but we're MOVING! It's been a long time coming and I couldn't be more thrilled on so many levels. But as anybody who has ever moved knows, it's the hardest thing too {selling the house, fixing stuff, keeping it clean...then packing, moving, and building}. We are redoing a house up the street and as fun it is to be creative with a tight budget, it's also so stressful to not only stay within the budget, but to make final decisions that you can't go back on. I'm horrible at making decisions.

I mean, the house is gutted, so the canvas is bare! I am excited to show you guys the final house in a few months. There are a few things we are going to wait on but for the most part, it will our style from the ground up. That's pretty darn exciting. I know!!!!!!!! We're moving because our current house doesn't have a yard, just decks and with two crazy kids, it just doesn't work {I know, I know....waaaaaaaaaa...boo hoo, right? life could be way worse, I know that, I should just shut my mouth...but it's all relative, so ANYWAYS...}.

Like I said, it's adding more to my plate than I can handle. I find myself forgetting about my blog and I'm not even sure what we've all eaten these past few weeks. Not to mention Wes {kids dad} has been in and out of town for the past 3 weeks and we've had a lot of company as well. That usually means lots of snacks, quick meals and/or eating out. More than we should. Blah Blah.

So, just when I was at my witts end thought I couldn't handle everything, I got this sweet email from a lady named Nona. It's not that it was so sweet, per se, it was just a wonderful reminder to stay strong and get motivated again. It's times like this that I need lots of motivation to get stuff done and keep my chin up and not run out of steam! Because it will all be worth it in the end!

TWO great reminders for everybody today: don't forget to accomplish even the smallest things that you have been wanting! GET MOTIVATED!!! No more excuses. And don't forget to tell somebody your positive thoughts and feelings. It just might make their difficult week a much better one.

Thank YOU Nona!

PureMamas Reader Asks...Christine Answers!

A PUREmamas reader recently wrote in asking a question about anesthesia and I was at a loss for words. So as promised, I reached out to those around me that are better equipped to answer such specific questions.

Christine, my favorite integrative health specialist and follow PUREmamas contributor, has the answer:

Hi Anonymous,

That's a great question. Anesthesia can often leave kids feeling groggy, drained and temporarily nutrient deficient (depending on the actual medication given). While many health care providers won't say much about the residual affects of anesthesia, it's definitely great that you want to take a proactive approach to get it out of his system.

One of my top suggestions to patients for wanting to remove residual from anesthetia is ascorbic acid, aka vitamin C. Ascorbic acid is an excellent, alkaline source of vitamin C that assists in tissue health, immunity and the removal of metabolic waste and residual from toxins. While you could give your little guy powdered ascorbic acid (fortify his food with it) you can also supplement directly with many common foods. If you decide to supplement his food you can add it to mashed fruits and veggies quite easily without him being able to detect any taste. Like adults, babies, toddlers and children tolerate ascorbic acid very well (even in very high doses).

Another great suggestion for babies and kids are Bach Flower Essence preparations. Of particular use is the BFE Olive. Olive helps when children feel mentally and physically exhausted by helping to restore vitality, strength and energy.

If you've decided to choose food over the supplemental form, a few delicious smoothie combinations will do the child good. You can make a smoothie drink or a food mash.

Here are two to try and the batches can be split up throughout the day. If your child doesn't like the taste directly, don't fret, use the mixture(s) to add to their foods. Both recipes help to gently detoxify and purify while improving immunity, tissue health and general ocular health.

Green Re-Gainer

1 scoop greens powder (I like Amazing Grass or Nano Greens)
1 organic granny smith apple
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 cup organic tomatoes
1/4 cup organic cherries
1/4 cup hemp meal
8-10 ounces of plain coconut water

C Boost

1 scoop greens powder
1/2 packet of stevia
1 cup organic strawberries
1 cup organic blueberries
1/2 cup frozen organic mangoes
1 organic carrot
1/4 cup hemp meal
8-10 ounces of coconut water

Check out this helpful list of fruits and veggies abundant in ascorbic acid for more nutritious goodness.

Other nutritional considerations include:

  • vegetarian based omega 3 oils (I like Nutiva: Hemp Oil) or fish oil (I like Health From The Sun: Pure Fish Oil).
  • juicing carrots, beets, dark greens and tomatoes to fortify your child's foods.

The nutrients contained in the foods I've referenced include: lutein, zeaxanthin, beta-carotene, zinc, omega 3, 6 and 9 essential fatty acids, bioflavonoids, ascorbic acid and vitamin E all essential for optimal ocular health.

Without knowing exactly what other medications or nutriceuticals your son might be using, remember to consult with an integrative health care specialist who understands pharmacology and nutriceutical sciences before beginning any regular nutriceutical program.
